Open Mic Session: "YOUNG"

CANCELED DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER

In conjunction with the Maier Museum of Art's exhibition of "Zeitgeist: The Art Scene of Teenage Basquiat", The Listening is hosting an open mic session celebrating, discussing and enjoying the messy miracle of being young. From the recklessness of adolescence to the boldness of pre-adulthood, we invite you to bring your poetry, your songs, your art, your voice. Whether you're navigating your own youth or still young at heart - we're here, and we're listening.

Open Mic Sign Up - 6:45pm

Event Start - 7:00pm (ish)

What is home for you?

For some of us, it is the four walls that you grew up, with all kinds of significant memories. For others, home is less about the place and more about the people that we've shared these memories with. Whether you call home a place or a group of people, we want to hear from you.

Bring your poetry and spoken word, your music and your talent to the mic. We are listening. Join us in the historic Anne Spencer Garden for this intimate session!

Open Mic Session: QUEEN

IMG_9809.PNG

Queens, it is time we start using our voices and creative gifts to magnify one another's strengths and build each other up. For this open mic session, there's no more room for middle-school girl tearing each other down or backstabbing. Together with the YWCA, we are setting out to speak life to girls' strengths, and bring out the royalty inside.

Bring yourself and a queen you know for our "Queen" open mic on March 9th at 7p at the YWCA! Since this will be a session to encourage and acknowledge, we are asking that all artists consider an atmosphere with respectful language and positive energy. Stay tuned for updates on giveaways and much more!

In the words of Maya Angelou,
"Your crown has been bought and paid for. Put it on your head and wear it."

The Listening: Dear America (Workshop & Open Mic Session)

Our Country. Your voice.

There's enough out there to challenge our ideas of what it means to be a part of this country. In return, we challenge the poets, the singers, the artists and performers to take their craft and address their country.

To twist our driving question, if you had the entire country willing to listen to you, what would you say?

Bring your fury and your faith, your heat and your hope, your passion and patriotism. Join us at 6pm for writing workshop to create together and sign-up on the open mic list.

Hosted and dining made available by The GR8 PL8 Cafe & Lounge, a collaborative event with The Poetry Group!

$5 (to benefit The Listening, Inc., a tax-exempt non-profit organization aimed to engage, change, and save lives with the performing arts.)
