Meet Geraldo Alonso

Creative Citizen: General Support

What Are You Currently Listening To/Reading?

I’m currently in the middle of three books: “The Republican Brain: The Science of Why They Deny Science–and Reality” by Chris Mooney; “Everything is Spiritual” by Rob Bell; and “The World As It Is: A Memoir of the Obama White House” by Ben Rhodes

I’m also listening to “99% Invisible” with Roman Mars

How long have you been a part of The Listening?

I’m new to The Listening– I’ve been involved since Summer 2020.

What’s your favorite event?

I’ve enjoyed live Open Mics… They almost feel like a relic from the pre-pandemic “normal” that we used to live. Can’t wait for them to come back.

Tell us about something you’ve created that you are incredibly proud of...

I love creating videos and taking photos. The ones that I am most proud capture the different stages of my kid’s lives. For my kids and all subjects, I love capturing their true essence. My goal is to have people look at my work and say, “That is so them!”

What’s a social issue that you are passionate about? Why?

I’ve always felt passionate about education, I love helping youth and young adults gain better opportunities for learning.

Cookouts or Restaurants?

It depends on the company I am hanging out with at the time.

Grape Jelly or Strawberry Jam?

Grape. You mean there are other options?

Which part of The Listening’s Manifesto stands out to you the most? Why?

I love the part that says, “Welcome to… unity and diversity and inclusion.” This is important to me because I believe that there is more that unites us than what separates us. I find that as I spend more time with people who are “different” than me there is still so much that makes us the same. I appreciate that The Listening provides space for us to celebrate our differences but also unites us in a safe community.

If you had a room full of people willing to listen to you, what would you say?

You are more capable to succeed than you give yourself credit. Push through the hard spots and allow the struggle to shape you into a stronger version of yourself.
