Pockets of time that allow young people to read books that focus on writers and characters of diverse backgrounds are a definition of empowerment that we love.

2019 was an amazing year for our organization, when we launched our CDF Freedom School program. Because of that first year, each subsequent year would become easier to run because we would’ve made our case that Freedom School makes a difference.

There’s nothing that we can say about this year that won’t be echoed by nearly every other human on the planet. However, thanks to our community of artists, dancers, poets, singers, activists, educators and learners, donors and community leaders, we were able to not only make it through this crazy year - we were able to stay active and continue serving our community while staying on mission.
