DONOR SPOTLIGHT: Dori B.

Welcome to our Donor Highlight Series! As we get closer to fundraising season, we want to highlight stories of impact. This year has been intense for many, and we are no exception - but we've also been able to lean on our mission. We would like to hear from the community of donors that keep us going - and help us keep the figurative lights on!

DAMN. Kendrick Lamar

How have the arts made an impact in your life?

When I was in the 5th grade, I got the book Black Boy by Richard Wright from my public library. From then on literature, poetry, theatre, music — they all beckoned to me, inviting me to explore the realities and histories of Black Americans. I would say that was life saving, preparing me for a lifelong journey of unearthing deeper levels of awareness of our nation’s original sin and the part I must play in reckoning with that.

Which one of The Listening’s events or programs are you the most passionate about? Why?

Freedom School. Learning to read and read critically was my path to purpose. I am passionate about watching others uncover their purpose through literature and the arts.

If you could describe yourself/your organization as a musical instrument, what would it be?

Drums

What social issue are you personally most passionate about?

Anti-racism

If you had a room full of people willing to listen to you, what would you say?

Together we can create the world we want to live in. We need each other.
