Hosted once again on the beautiful campus of Randolph College, this six week reading enrichment program encourages students to believe that they have something inside so strong and have a voice to speak on some of our most crucial social issues.

2022 Theme: Time Traveling!

Our program theme this summer is Time Traveling! You all know our mission and our goals, which are to use the performing arts to make an impact in the areas of social justice, education and mental health. And you probably know that we are just one of many local and national organizations who are about that life. You probably also know that this work has existed LONG before we did, so we’d like to explore what that has looked like, from the 1970s to now and what the future looks like for artists and activists!

2022 National Day of Social Action: Climate Justice

Once again, together with the Children’s Defense Fund, each Freedom School site around the country observes the National Day of Social Action. Taking place on the 3rd Wednesday of July, this day is reserved for youth-led action on social issues. In years past, we’ve been with our kids as they learned and spoke out about issues like gun violence, voter registration, and youth justice/incarceration. This year, we turn our attention to climate justice and environmental issues. With support from Youth Vs. Apocalypse, we look forward to engaging our scholars and inviting the community to join us as we say something worth listening to.

We need your help.

One of our organization’s core values is COMMUNITY, and this year, we need our community in a big way. In addition to our team of interns and administrators, we need a collective of impassioned volunteers to help make our summer an even bigger success. Check out the ways you can join our movement this summer and ROCK THE FREEDOM SCHOOL!

  • Take a morning and join us as a Harambee Read Aloud Guest! Each morning, we “pull together” and celebrate our little community with energetic intention. Sign up now!

  • Check out our Amazon Wish List! Take a look at what some of our needs are this summer!

  • Uplifting our interns is one of our focuses, as it aligns with one of the program components of Intergenerational Leadership Development. Simply put, our team needs your support this summer as we lead our scholars. Contact us to be one of our Servant Leader Mentors/Allies.

  • Not only are we making community impact, but we’re also making memories! We are looking for talented photographers to help capture the images that tell the story of our work. These photos will be used in our marketing materials, in print and digital. Contact us to become one of our Photographers or Videographers!

Last, but not least…

Our Freedom School program has been completely free for all our scholars - it’s something that we’re incredibly proud of. This year is no different, but in order to run our program equitably and with fidelity, it takes your financial support. We are seeking to engage our corporate community to sponsor this program and keep it alive! Your sponsorship dollars help pay our summer staff and provide our scholars with an amazing experience.

This is going to be a great summer, and we can’t wait to see all our scholars again! If you have any questions, hit us up!
